indoor rock climbing – Rock Climbing Is Not Just For Men

Rock Climbing began as a man’s sport. This has changed in recent years as ever increasing numbers of women have become involved.

The first women climbers were involved in mountain climbing and rock climbing was a part of that. The major difference in mountain climbing and rock climbing is that the mountain climber is seeking the easy way to ascend to the top of the mountain while the rock climber is looking for the hardest way. However, sometimes rock climbing is the only way on certain sections of the climb. So, when women began to climb mountains, they naturally began to climb rocks as well.

The first written record of a female mountain climber was a Miss Pinter who climbed Mt. Blanc in 1799. This feat was recorded by a fellow climber and established the lady as the rock climbing woman pioneer. Although there were other female mountain climbers that followed Miss Pinter, they were mostly the wives or girlfriends of male climbers. These male climbers usually omitted the names of their female partners when writing of their adventures.

This was because climbing was not seen as a very “seemly” activity for women. In fact, it wasn’t until almost one hundred years after Miss Pinter’s ground breaking ascent that a woman by the name of Meta Brevoot actually got around giving up her dress for trousers when on a climb. This makes you imagine young ladies climbing to the top of alpine peaks in their long flowing dresses with parasols open.

It was not until the more liberated times in the latter part of the 20th century that women in rock climbing began to come into their own. There were a large number of women’s rock climbing clubs formed during this period and also rock climbing became a part of many of the outdoor programs that were being developed to increase the confidence of females by exposing them to outdoor challenges.

The large numbers of women in rock climbing that have excelled and conquered some of the most difficult and highly rated climbs in the world prove that this sport is not for men only. Although on the whole, men have greater strength than women, they do not always have more stamina. The increase in indoor rock climbing facilities has opened the door to even more women. It increases confidence and is fun. That is a good combination and the relative safety of the indoor climbing has contributed to a wider acceptance.

Climbing: Can Be Enjoyed By All

It’s a common misconception that climbing is only for those who are young and in good shape. That, however, is complete nonsense. People from all walks of life enjoy this activity. Some of them actually climb sheer cliffs and go exploring deep inside dark caverns, while others are more of the weekend warrior type who enjoy the indoor rock climbing wall. Even if you’re out of shape, slightly overweight, obese, a little older, or even if you’ve never worked out in your life, you can still enjoy this fun activity that also provides a great workout. You should first find a good instructor who is skilled in the art of climbing and who will also make sure you’re safe while you’re still learning.
What If I Fall?
This is the biggest question asked of instructors when newbies are inquiring about lessons. Relax, you’re not going to fall as long as your instructor is skilled and knows what he or she is doing. When you are climbing, you are strapped into a harness and you’ll have plenty of climbing rope. This rope will keep you safe in case you happen to lose your footing and fall. When you’re learning, it’s not like you’re going to be climbing tall buildings or sheer cliffs anyways. When just starting out, you’ll be on an indoor or outdoor climbing wall which is tailored for teaching and which will only have you a few feet off the ground. Just to make sure, though, the rope and harness are in place to keep you as safe as possible just in case.
A Great Workout
Not only is climbing a lot of fun but it’s also a fantastic workout. When people are looking for the ultimate workout, they generally want aerobic exercise combined with anaerobic exercise. Climbing provides both of these aspects. You get the aerobic because you’re constantly moving your arms and legs to move yourself up the wall, cliff or whatever else you’re climbing; and you get the anaerobic exercise because it takes strength to move yourself from peg to peg. You get the best of both worlds and you learn a very fun and useful skill in the process.
There’s no question that climbing is gaining in popularity as rock walls can be found in indoor climbing centers, fitness centers, and even at carnivals and other festivals. Indoor rock climbing and weight loss?

I just rejoined my gym with its fantastic climbing walls. A year ago, I was climbing several nights a week and alternating with weight training, core work and cardio. I was in good shape. I got pregnant again in September and quit climbing in November (when my OB busted me,) and quit working out in December (morning sickness, laziness, work, etc.) My baby is 5 months old and I have 30 pounds to lose. I have limited time at the gym now and my 5 year old enjoys climbing with me. I'd like to see if I can burn up some of the weight just on the walls. (I'd rather not adjust my diet much…) Thoughts from climbers? Be nice– I am a working mom of two– the fact that I can get to the gym 3x a week is a miracle. And the question: can I lose weight climbing?

Know of a rock climbing harness for a heavier person?

My husband loves to rock clmib but has put on some extra weight over the last couple years. He is actually quite muscular but has put on some fat over it! Anyway, he would really love to start rock climbing again but we cannot find a harness that will fit him. Do you know of any larger harness that would fit a person with 33 in legs and a 40 in. waist? Thanks.

indoor rock climbing – The Origins of Rock Climbing

The history of climbing is a recent history. Unlike many sports, climbing does not date back to ancient times. People tended to climb the steep faces of rocky cliffs only when they had to and now they do it because they want to do it.

There was some rock climbing down as a part of Alpine mountaineering. This was done most for rescue type operations. It was not until the latter part of the 19th century that rock climbing was first seen as a sporting activity. It seems to have emerged in three distinct European areas around this time. The first was in Germany in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in the Southeastern part of the country near the Czech border. By 1903, there were almost 500 climbers active in this region and climbing clubs were being formed.

Around the same time, rock climbing was being viewed as a sport in England. Some of the early climbers attracted a lot of attention with solo climbs of very difficult cliff formations. It is here that the practice of assigning difficulty ratings to various formations began. Although formal climbing clubs were slow to form here, many climbers began to meet informally to discuss their climbs and share notes on techniques.

In the Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy, a 17 year old student from Munich, Germany, made a daring solo climb and this led to this area being the third great European hotbed of rock climbing. In the United States, rock climbing and mountain climbing were viewed as similar activities, and it was not until the 1950′s that it began to emerge as a separate sport. Still much of the techniques used in rock climbing were developed as a part of mountain climbing.

In recent years, rock climbing has going through a period of rapid evolution. New styles and improved equipment are constantly being introduced. Many rock climbers are starting to consider the hobby as almost more of a lifestyle than a sport. One trend has been the introduction of indoor rock climbing in urban areas. These facilities have artificial rock faces that are designed to simulate actual formations. The safety equipment used in the indoor arenas have made it possible to practice and experience much of the thrill and demanding nature of rock climbing without the risk.

Despite the safety equipment and improved techniques, rock climbing is not only a sport that demands a great deal of physical strength and stamina, but is also hazardous. The history of rock climbing is recent history because mankind had enough challenges to his strength and stamina in just routine living in the past. Rocks were only climbing if there was some compelling reason to climb them. It says much about our modern society that rock climbing is becoming a popular activity. There is something in human nature that always seeks a challenge. Rock climbing came into existence because of that basic drive.

indoor rock climbing – Basic Rock Climbing Terminology

If you get the climbing bug, you are entering a unique niche of people. Much like visiting another country, you need to get down some of the lingo being used.

Much like any sport, climbing has its own terminology. Unlike most other sports, the terminology often does not have an obvious meaning. Here are a few terms you should know.

Anchor – Not the kind you find on a boat. In climbing, the anchor is usually two pieces that support the belay when climbing. What is a belay? Read on.

Belay – The belay is rope anchor system used to provide support for a climber. The belay is often another person who feeds out rope to the climber as he or she makes progress up the climb. The belay is run through a friction system, often a mechanical brake. If the climber falls, the belay system is used to keep them from plunging to the ground.

Bouldering – Pretty much what it sounds like. To practice technique and have a bit of fun, you find large boulders and climb them. The relatively minimal height makes falling less of an issue, but you probably want to throw down some pads to cushion any falls. An excellent way to build up strength in muscles needed for more advanced climbs.

Crimp – Essentially the art of finding a finger hold where there doesn’t appear to be one.

Elvis – Also known as the sewing machine. When a climbers leg starts to vibrate up and down. Causes include being tired, being scared out of your wits and good music.

Face Climbing – Pretty much what you think. The art of climbing a vertical face using primarily finger holds and edges to work your way up.

Harness – A nylon device worn around the waist and legs and tied off to supporting ropes. The harness is a safety feature everyone should wear.

Indoor Climbing – Also known as gym climbing. Most cities have climbing gyms where you can practice on walls inside. Alternatively, you can empty out your basement or garage and build your own. Great way to practice and build up strength.

Leading – The first person up on the climb. Responsible for determining the route, solving problems, placing anchors and so on. Not for beginners.

Pitch – Another term that means something other than what it sounds like. A pitch has nothing to do with the vertical angle of the rock. It is the distance between two belay points.

As with any new sport, you are going to run into far more terms than just these. If you don’t know what something means, just ask. Rock climbing is one of those sports were beginners are universally welcomed and old pros tend to be very friendly.

Rock Climbing Wall – Learning To Rock Climb

Many people are first bitten by the rock climbing bug when they attend a party or event that has a rock climbing wall for guests to play on. After they have experienced the thrill of the sport, they want to learn more but dont know how or where to go about doing this.

The best place for an aspiring rock climber to start is on a rock climbing wall at an indoor climbing gym. It will be on the rock climbing wall that you will learn the techniques you will need in order to be a successful climber. A professional staff will be on hand to school you in safety procedures, familiarize you with the equipment and impart their knowledge so that you will be ready to rock climb in the great outdoors in no time.

It is not only beginning rock climbers that utilize the rock climbing wall. Seasoned veterans will use a rock climbing wall to perfect or learn new techniques and when the weather isnt conducive to climbing but they cant last another day without a rock climbing challenge.

When you join a rock climbing gym, people who share your passion for the sport can share their secrets of success with you as well as advise you on the best places to climb. You can join a climbing team, compete in climbing competitions, or just enjoy perfecting your moves for when you are ready to tackle those rock faces outside. You are advised to practice on a rock climbing wall before you take on the unpredictable and dangerous rock faces and gain confidence and skill.

One of the skills that are best learned on an indoor rock climbing wall is top roping. You will have two ends of rope dangling. You tie onto one end of the rope and the belayer will take up the slack from the other end by using the belaying device. When the person who is climbing gets to the top, the belayer blocks the rope and lets the climber lean into the rope. The belayer then slowly lowers the climber as he walks off the cliff backwards.

This is just one of the many things you will learn if you decide to take up the sport of rock climbing. Find a rock climbing gym in your area and get ready to get to the top.
