Rock climbing is commonly misunderstood or thought of by those who are not in the loop. It is seen as the domain of adrenaline junkies and tough macho guys. While rock climbing certainly utilizes strength it can be taken up by almost anyone willing to learn and dedicate their time to the sport. There is also important rock climbing clothes and gear that are necessary for safe and comfortable climbing. Wearing the right rock climbing clothes and safety gear can make the climb much more enjoyable and on top of that, the safety gear can save your life.

Don’t Over Do It

There are many level of difficulties when you pick what you want to climb, and the longer you are involved in the sport you will probably want to branch out and try different types of climbs. To start out with however indoor climbing and bouldering are a great introduction to the sport.

One of the more interesting new sports emerging world wide is indoor climbing. What is making it such an instant hit with normally outdoor oriented enthusiasts?

What is Indoor Climbing? It is often called Indoor Rock Climbing and that gives a clue to its true definition. Indoor climbing takes place on a simulated rock wall located in an indoor gym. The idea is to learn the skills of rock climbing in a safe and controlled environment. Although some indoor rock climbers do not ever make the step into outdoor climbing, indoor climbing gyms provide learning and practicing venues for those planning to move outdoors eventually.

The few critics of indoor climbing usually focus on the “indoor” part of the experience. They claim that the true joy of climbing comes from the blue sky above you and the smell of fresh clean air as you labor up a “real” rock face. One of the main counters to this criticism is the fact that indoor climbing is available year round. It does not matter if the wind chill is dipping near zero and a foot of snow covers the ground. The indoor rock climbing gym is still ready to provide its challenge.

The wall is designed and produced by several different “climbing wall” manufacturers that make each wall unique. The ideal wall has several levels of difficulty and caters to both experts, honing their skills, and beginners learning new ones. The climbers are required to wear safety equipment that does nothing to make the climb easier, but provides protection from falls. The artificial rock face has terrain features and moveable hand holds that can often be rearranged to allow a wide variety of climbing routes.

Most of the climbing facilities serve dual purposes. They are called gyms because the act of climbing is a physically demanding activity that not only serves as exercise but also sharpens other skills such as coordination and confidence. Many of the patrons of climbing gyms are serious climbers practicing skills and keeping themselves in physical shape. Others are simply fun seekers enjoying a new experience. Most of the larger indoor climbing gyms cater to both groups. They offer instructions and social activities for the casual customers and serious competitions and challenging climbs for the more advanced patrons.

Indoor climbing is a safe way to get a feel for the sport of rock climbing. Many indoor climbers go on to experience the thrill of the outdoor climbing world, but others are content to stay indoors trading that clear blue sky and fresh air for safety

If you work out at a climbing gym for any period of time, you’ll realize that a significant percentage of the members did not start out as climbers in search of technical improvement. Many of those who are hanging from their fingertips and standing on features little larger than the thickness of a pencil are there because they hate to exercise! So what was the catch that has exercise haters getting in far better shape than they could dream about at an indoor climbing facility? A climbing gym provides an incredible workout for both the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system without tedious iron pumping or pedal spinning. More importantly, one of the fastest growing sports of the last decade got its popularity because it is just plain fun.

If you want to try out climbing indoors, find out if you have a climbing gym in your local vicinity. If you live in or near a city of over 100,000 there will probably be a climbing gym or two nearby. Many smaller cities have climbing facilities as well.

Chances are the gym will not only have all the gear you need but an introductory class so that you can start up the “cliffs” within minutes. Expect to find many paths up the textured surfaces. Usually there are so many routes up the walls that climbers of all levels can find a challenge cracking a sequence of moves that will allow passage to the top. Besides the roped climbs, climbing facilities usually have a bouldering section where groups of climbers work on specialized “problems.” Boulder problems are short sequences of more difficult moves where skills are polished and an encouraging atmosphere keeps motivation power high. To round out the exercise aspect of climbing gyms, most facilities build long traversing climbs close to the ground so that a person who wants to exercise for endurance could stay climbing until total muscular failure if so desired. Some climbers enjoy the gym experience because the activity of climbing can be practiced with an exceptional degree of safety and at a moment’s notice. Career professionals and house moms alike can hit the gym and be nearly as proficient as the person who has unlimited time to climb since the indoor cliff is open day and night. Should one decide to take the sport outside, a short course about safety on natural rock will be all that is necessary. Since the gym climber will have already developed the skills for advanced movement he / she will be ready to partner up with a competent leader on increasingly challenging technical climbs.

At first glance, rock climbing in Kentucky may seem like a far fetched idea. Au contraire! Red River Gorge provides great rock climbing areas in KY.

Rock Climbing Areas in KY – Kentucky

Located in the Daniel Boone National Forest, the greater Red River Gorge area is over 26,000 acres. The Red River runs for approximately 20 miles through the area. The area around the river is rife with rock climbing opportunities with multi-pitch walls, boulders and climbing roofs to try out your over vertical technique. The Red River Gorge can be reached by car in about an hour from Lexington, Ky. Trails and camping are plentiful in the area, so you can make a weekend of your trip.

Rock climbing is permitted through most of the gorge, but a few areas are off limits. You can ask the forest rangers for a list, but you generally are barred from climbing or descending on any of the arches. Also, all routes are pre-set and rock climbers are forbidden to start new routes without getting permission first from the rangers. Sorry for the downer, but you don’t want to get arrested.

When rock climbing in Red River Gorge, there are a few areas getting universal thumbs up. For traditional climbing, the following areas get thumbs up:

1. Pebble Beach

2. Sky Bridge Ridge

3. Fortress

4. Long Wall

These areas all have epic climbing routes with ratings all well above five.

Sport climbing presents an entirely different challenge and the Red River Gorge area meets it. Top areas include:

1. Global Village with multiple climbs

2. Military Wall

3. Roadside Crag

4. Pebble Beach

5. Sky Bridge Ridge

If you are new to the area, the best two spots to hit are Pebble Beach and Sky Bridge Ridge. Each offers a variety of climbs, which gives you the best opportunity to try out your technique and take on a few challenges.

There are other areas in Kentucky that offer solid rock climbing. The Red River Gorge, however, is the king of the mountain when it comes to rock climbing areas in KY.

Rock climbing does not always have to be outdoors. If for example you live in an area where you cannot access rocky landscapes yet you are interested in the activity, it is time you considered doing indoor rock climbing. This is actually what people in the urban areas are engaging in. One thing that you never really get to experience is the tough challenges that come with this activity when you do it in a natural setting. It’s good for physical exercise and practice though.
